JSON Formatter
Beautify, minify, validate and escape JSON — and get the line and column when something is wrong.
How to use
- Paste the JSON —— Drop it into the input box. Press Ctrl+Enter (Cmd+Enter on a Mac) to format quickly.
- Choose an action —— Format expands the structure, Minify strips every unnecessary character, Escape turns it into a string you can embed in code.
- Copy the result —— "Copy result" puts it straight onto your clipboard.
About JSON Formatter
JSON is deliberately unforgiving. It allows no comments, no single-quoted strings, no trailing comma after the last element, and every key must be wrapped in double quotes. That is why JSON which looks perfectly fine to the eye so often refuses to parse.
This tool validates using the browser’s native JSON parser and, when it fails, reports the position of the error translated into a line and column number. That is usually far quicker than bisecting the file by hand in your editor.
Everything — formatting, minifying, escaping — happens locally. API responses and configuration files you paste in never leave your machine.
FAQ
Is my data uploaded?
No. Formatting, minifying and validation all run in your browser locally, so API responses and configuration files stay on your computer.
My JSON looks correct but the parser rejects it. Where should I look?
The usual suspects: a key without double quotes, a single-quoted string, a trailing comma, a leading zero on a number, or invisible characters picked up when copying out of Excel or a chat client.
Does it handle very large JSON?
Keep individual documents under about 10 MB. Beyond that the browser struggles to render the text area smoothly, and a command-line tool such as jq will serve you better.
